In their second match of the season, the Franklin-Simpson Lady Cats' defeated the Todd County Central Lady Rebels, 3-2, in an early 13th District match last Tuesday night in Elkton.
The Lady Cats haven't played a five set district match with the Lady Rebels since 2016, but as head coach Megan Vincent says, "Nothing ever comes easy for us."
"I believed they could win tonight and they had to believe that too," Vincent said. "This was also good that we played a five set match and it makes me now as a practice motivator that I got to push the girls that they need to remain mentally and physically focused for a five set match. I am super proud of the girls as they did exactly what they needed to do to win this district match."
Franklin-Simpson bounced back in a major way as they were coming off their season opening three set loss to the Daviess County Lady Panthers.
"We played so much better than we did against Daviess County," Lexy Vaughn said. "Our body language was good, we were moving a lot quicker. We were patient and our energy overall was higher. We played more like a team tonight."
The Lady Cats won the first set 25-12 as they led throughout. Franklin-Simpson led early in the second set but the Lady Rebels took the lead and held on for the 25-22 win. In the third set, the Lady Cats scored five straight points to open the set and went on to the 25-19 win to lead two sets to one. The fourth set was a back and forth affair as the lead changed three times with Todd County Central coming away with the 26-24 win, tying the match at 2-2. In the fifth set, it was all Franklin-Simpson as they seized control of the set and the match for the 15-8 win and 3-2 victory.
"This is one of the fun games that we had. It was back and forth," Maddie Squires said. "No district games are easy but we still have our number one goal and that is to be number one and win the district on our home floor."
"It is exciting to be able to see how much these girls have improved from last season," Lady Rebels' head coach Stephanie Conquest said. "They showed a lot of fight and it is kind of like poking a bear. Pretty soon, they are going to wake up and beat some teams and so I'm ready for that to happen. But overall, I know we wanted to win but to go five sets with Franklin-Simpson, my girls showed a lot of heart tonight."
The Lady Cats' next home match will be against the Glasgow Lady Scotties on Thursday night at the F-S Gym beginning at 5:30 p.m.
