The Kansas City Chiefs are the Super Bowl LIV champions by defeating the San Francisco 49ers 31-20 at Hard Rock Stadium at Miami Gardens, FL.
It’s the third time in this postseason; they had to overcome a double digit deficit for a victory which has never been done. They trailed by 24 points to the Houston Texans and 10 points to both the Tennessee Titans and the 49ers. Plus, it’s their first Super Bowl victory in 50 years, half of a century.
“It’s a beautiful trophy,” Chiefs owner Clark Hunt said. “I’m so happy for our players, coaches and fans. And especially Andy Reid. Nobody deserves this trophy more than Andy Reid.”
After forcing the Chiefs to punt on their opening possession in the 1st Quarter, the 40ers marched down the field but settled for a 38-yard field goal by Robbie Gould for a 3-0 lead.
Kansas City answered back with a 15 play, 75-yard drive that was culminated by a 1-yard touchdown run by Patrick Mahomes. Harrison Butker provided the extra point as they led 7-3.
In the 2nd Quarter, the Chiefs’ defense created the first turnover of the game as Rashaud Breeland intercepted a pass from Jimmy Garoppolo. Kansas City’s offense drove down the field and did not get the desired touchdown but instead for a 31-yard field goal from Butker for a 10-3 lead.
San Francisco responded with a game tying touchdown drive that consisted of a seven play, 80-yard drive with Garoppolo throwing a 15-yard catch and run to Kyle Juszczyk. Gould kicked the extra point as the game was tied at 10-10.
The 49ers took the opening drive of the 3rd Quarter down to Kansas City’s 25-yard line but was held to a field goal, a 42-yarder from Gould, his second of the game, as they regained the lead, 13-10.
San Francisco’s defense, who was one of the best statistically all season, forced their first turnover of the game as Fred Warren intercepted a pass from Mahomes on Kansas City’s first offensive drive in the 2nd Half. The 49ers offense capitalized off the turnover as they drove 55 yards in six plays with Raheem Mostert finished off the drive with a 1-yard touchdown run. With Gould’s extra point, they extended their lead to two scored 20-10.
The 49ers scored 17 unanswered points as the Chiefs suffered back-to-back turnovers by their defense. Kansas City rallied in the 4th Quarter as they drove 83 yards in 10 plays. Aided by a pass interference call on San Francisco that placed the ball on their 1-yard line, Mahomes threw his first touchdown pass of the game with a 1-yard pass to Travis Kelce. Butker’s extra point got the Chiefs to within three, 20-17.
After forcing San Francisco to punt, Kansas City drove 65 yards in seven plays to regain the lead. Mahomes, who completed all five passes on the drive for 60 yards, threw his second touchdown pass, a 5-yarder to Damien Williams and with the extra point by Butker, the Chiefs led 24-20 with 2:44 remaining.
Garoppolo has seven-career game winning 4th Quarter or overtime drives as Joe Montana did 31 years ago as he led the 49ers 92 yards down the field for the Super Bowl XXIII game-winning touchdown drive against the Cincinnati Bengals. But there would be no revisionist history as the Chiefs’ defense bent but did not break as they forced a turnover on downs.
Kansas City took over possession with 1:25 left in the game and on the second play of the drive, Williams ran down the left sideline for a 38-yard touchdown run for their third touchdown in the 4th Quarter, scoring 21 unanswered points which ties a Super Bowl record with the Dallas Cowboys who achieved the same feat in Super Bowl XXVII. Butker kicked the extra point as head coach Andy Reid won his 222nd career game on Feb. 2nd, 2020 and gets his first Super Bowl victory as the Chiefs defeated the 49ers, 31-20.
“This is what it’s all about,” Chiefs head coach Andy Reid said. “What a great team, great coaches. Appreciate every bit of it.”
For 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, he suffers a second Super Bowl loss, first as head coach. In both losses. his team has lost double digit leads as he was the offensive coordinator for the Atlanta Falcons, who lost a 25-point lead to the New England Patriots in Super Bowl LI.
Kansas City outgained San Francisco 397-351 in total yards of offense. Patrick Mahomes was selected as the Super Bowl MVP as he is the youngest quarterback to be named as the MVP of the Super Bowl. He completed 26 of his 42 passes for 286 yards for two touchdowns with two interceptions and ran for 29 yards on nine carries for a touchdown.
“We never lost faith,” Patrick Mahomes said. “That’s the biggest thing. Everybody on this team, no one had their head down. We believed in each other. That’s what we preached all year long.”
