The road to Lexington begins this weekend when the battle for the UK Orthopedics Class 4-A Gridiron Bowl Championship begins.
The Franklin-Simpson Wildcats, the number three seed in the playoffs, will play at the Allen County-Scottsville Patriots, the number two seed, to begin their playoff journey.
The two teams played each other at James “Shadetree” Mathews Stadium at Hugh Crowdus Field on Sept. 25 with the Patriots defeating the Wildcats 28-7.
The Wildcats have won their last seven opening round games since 2013. They defeated the Patriots in their two playoff games, 40-0 in 2016 and 56-20 last season. Overall, Allen County-Scottsville is 3-6 in opening round playoff games since 2011. They are 1-1 overall at Patriots Field in the round with their only win coming last season, 27-25, over the Warren East Raiders.
“Allen County-Scottsville is a tough team,” Wildcats head coach Max Chaney said. “They know all about us and vice versa, we know all about them. We can’t get off to a slow start like we did against them back in September or like we did against Ohio County.”
The winner of that game will play the winner of the opening round district playoff game when the Russell County Lakers, the 2020 regular season champions and number one seed, will host the Warren East Raiders, who are the number four seed.
The two winners will play each other on Nov. 20th for the Class 4-A Region 1 District 2 championship with the higher seeded team hosting the championship game.
The District 2 champion will play the District 1 champion. District 1 opening round playoff games feature the Logan County Cougars hosting the Hopkins County Central. The winner of that game will play the winner of the Calloway County Lakers and the Hopkinsville Tigers.
The two winners will also play each other the weekend of Nov. 27th for the Class 4-A Region 1 District 1 championship with the higher seeded team hosting the championship game.
The two district winners will meet for the Region 1 championship with the team with the highest seed or RPI (ratings percentage index) hosting the game.
The KHSAA Commonwealth Gridiron Bowl Championship is scheduled to take place at the University of Kentucky’s Kroger Field Dec. 18-20.
