The Veteran Plaza located at the Franklin Post Office is one of five finalists in the 2020 “Beautify The Bluegrass” contest sponsored by Kentucky Living.

The plaza, which was created by the Franklin Garden Club, consists of a Blue Star Marker, flowerbeds and nearly 400 bricks engraved with the names of local veterans. The display is located at the base of the flagpole at the post office. The garden club chose the spot as an effort to improve the town and honor local veterans.

Voting took place through Aug. 5, and the winner will be announced during the “Best in Kentucky Awards Show,” a virtual event, on Aug. 27 at 10 a.m. Those interested in viewing can visiting or by watching on the Kentucky Living’s Facebook and Youtube channels.

Governor Andy Beshear is set to choose the Governor’s Award from among the top five finalists.

The Veteran Plaza was installed in July 2019 and took approximately four months to complete. A dedication ceremony was held for the community on Veterans Day, Nov. 11, 2019. The dedication is 165-square-feet and in a “ V” shape to represent “victory” and to honor the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington D.C.
