The "Chinese Cultural Experience" event had a successful start in Simpson County on Tuesday, Feb. 14. The "Chinese Cultural Experience" mobile unit of the Confucius Institute at Western Kentucky University opened for students of Simpson County schools and for residents of Franklin. The event provided them a unique opportunity to experience Chinese culture directly and intensely. Assisted by the central office of Simpson County schools and by the Confucius Institute Classroom, Chinese teachers at CI-WKU presented the cultural exhibition to students and community residents.

The activities associated with the "Chinese Cultural Exhibition" will take place for two days in all. On the first day, the CI-WKU mobile unit was open for students of Simpson-Franklin Middle School and High School. On the same afternoon, the mobile unit was stationed in downtown Franklin for all residents. On the second day, it drove to Simpson Elementary.

The mobile unit, which has been converted from a mobile home bus to become a Chinese museum on wheels, is around 40' x 13' x 10' (ft) in size and features a prominent CI-WKU logo. The inside of the unit is divided into six compartments, including musical instruments, facts/holidays, Chinese calligraphy, arts/crafts, wellness/games and costumes.

The students were curious and excited about the activities and explored the inside in an orderly fashion. They reviewed what they had learned before in their classes and connected their old and new knowledge about Chinese culture and language.

During the community opening time downtown, many residents were attracted by the lively culture exhibition. Some parents took whole families to visit the bus after their children had told them about the event. Many took unforgettable family pictures in front of the unit. That same afternoon, The Gallery on the Square in Franklin also invited Chinese teacher Ms. Shi to hold a K-5 art class. Children learned to how to paint Chinese opera mask after visited the mobile unit.

The Confucius Institute at WKU strives to promote Chinese culture in Kentucky, playing an important role in enhancing local cultural diversity. The "Chinese Cultural Experience" mobile unit has become a particularly effective presentation stage that brings Chinese culture to different areas.

As an outstanding Confucius Institute classroom in Kentucky, the Confucius Institute at Simpson County schools has been organizing consistent Chinese courses from elementary to high school for six years along with community activities. The successful cooperation between CI-WKU and Simpson County schools will hopefully attract more schools to apply for the Chinese culture and language program.
