A former Franklin-Simpson All-Star baseball player who spent the past eight summers in the professional ranks will take over the 2012 girls fast-pitch softball program.

Matthew Wilhite was named the Lady Cat coach Friday, according to F-S High School Athletic Director Tim Schlosser. Wilhite will replace Steve Cauley, who led the Lady Cats for three seasons, posting a 14-20 record and winning the 13th District Tournament last season. Wilhite will return most of the starters from the 2011 district championship team – many of which are still underclassmen.

Wilhite led the Wildcats to back-to-back Fourth Region championships and to the 1999 Final Four before becoming a record-setting and two-time All-Sun Belt Conference relief pitcher at Western Kentucky University. His eight years of professional baseball included five in Triple A with the California Angels’ and Colorado Rockies’ organizations.

Wilhite said this coaching stint is not a one-year thing. He said he has a lot of pride in F-S High athletics and wants to win.

F-S plays in a tough region in girls fast-pitch softball. Defending Kentucky champion Allen County-Scottsville and Greenwood have won three of the past five state championships.

Wilhite and Philadelphia Phillies starter Joe Blanton anchored Franklin-Simpson’s 1999 Final Four team and were the top pitchers on a staff that set a state record in team strikeouts with 427. Wilhite then played from 2000-03 at π, setting numerous pitching records that still standing. He was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference in 2002 and 2003, becoming the only relief pitcher to ever be named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Year in 2003.

Wilhite recently earned his bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University and is currently pursuing a master’s degree. He will be employed full-time as a teacher in the Simpson County School System effective Jan. 31.

He is the son of Max and Allison Wilhite of Franklin.

Girls fast-pitch softball practice officially begins Feb. 15. The season gets under way March 19 in a home game with Warren Central.
