Woman dies in wreck with police car
A two-vehicle head-on collision involving a Franklin Police officer claimed the life of a 30-year-old Franklin woman on Ky. 100 east Saturday afternoon .
LaDonna S. Southard, 30, was pronounced dead at the scene by Simpson County Deputy Coroner Patrick Crafton.
Crafton said preliminary results of an autopsy performed Sunday at the state Medical Examiner's Office show Ms. Southard died of multiple blunt force injuries.
Franklin Police Officer Kelly Mayfield, 36, was taken by the F-S Ambulance Service to the Bowling Green Medical Center for treatment of several broken bones. He was later transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn.
Mayfield was listed in stable condition Monday. The veteran officer was placed on paid administrative leave while he recovers from his injuries.
Kentucky State Police said witnesses reported Ms. Southard was headed east (toward Scottsville) when, for unknown reasons, crossed the center line and struck Mayfield's west-bound marked police cruiser head on.
State police said Mayfield was on duty and responding to a non-emergency call when the collision occurred. He did not have his emergency equipment activated and was traveling in a group of vehicles.
Mayfield, a member of the Franklin Police Department since February 2003, had to be extricated from his cruiser by the Jaws of Life used by members of F-S Fire and Rescue.
State police said the driver of another vehicle traveling in front of Mayfield swerved to avoid being struck by Ms. Southard. Mayfield was traveling directly behind the vehicle and was unable to avoid the collision, authorities said.
Ms. Southard and Mayfield were wearing seat belts when the collision occurred just before 2:30 p.m. just east of the Ky. 100 and Ky. 1008 intersection.
State police say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the accident. Trooper Terry Alexander is investigating.
Another fatal accident was reported Saturday in southcentral Kentucky. Bonnie M. Trembley, 56, of Russellville died in a single-vehicle accident on U.S. 68 east in Logan County.
Crafton Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements for Ms. Southard.
